Characteristics of titanium dioxide for paper industry
Time: 2023-09-08
Paper is the third largest user of titanium dioxide. Low-grade paper because of the consideration of production costs generally do not use titanium dioxide, the main use of china clay, talcum powder, calcium carbonate, etc., but they will reduce the strength of the paper, increase the weight of the paper. Decorative paper, Bible paper and paper money (such as: dictionaries, pictorials, magazine covers, computers, banknotes, copier paper and decorative paper, etc.) in the must use titanium dioxide, the use of titanium dioxide paper, whiteness is good, high strength, glossy, thin and smooth, printing does not penetrate the printing, opacity under the same conditions than calcium carbonate, talcum powder is 10 times higher than the weight of the weight can be reduced by 15% to 30%.
Decorative paper, also known as titanium white paper, is mainly used as raw material for making furniture, flooring, wallpaper and so on. For the requirements of anti-aging paper, rutile must be used; more rutile is used in high gray paper, this high gray paper must use rutile, because the covering power of anatase titanium dioxide can not meet the requirements. Rutile titanium dioxide are used in low gray paper, such as bible paper and paper money, bible paper requires good opacity, generally use Rutile titanium dioxide can meet; minting paper also requires good opacity, the main use of Rutile titanium dioxide. In the country, the amount of titanium dioxide used in decorative paper is much higher than the other two varieties, this situation is determined by the level of consumption in China. As a result of house decoration, high-grade furniture, the large number of demand, the amount of decorative paper gradually rising; Bible paper due to the use of titanium dioxide as raw material, the cost is much higher than ordinary paper, given the domestic consumption level, the Bible paper market is very limited; and the use of minting paper manufacturing is subject to national control, the amount of relatively stable, will not have an impact on the titanium dioxide market. According to incomplete estimates, the domestic use of titanium dioxide for decorative paper more than 30,000 tons per year. Decorative paper in the amount of titanium dioxide 20 to 40%, other paper titanium dioxide 1 to 5%. Due to the traditional cultural paper production mills have been transformed to produce decorative paper, decorative paper production increased very quickly, the price of decorative paper in recent years has been a downward trend.
No matter which kind of paper (raw paper), the production process is the same:
Rutile is used for weathering and high ash paper, and anatase is used for paper with low weathering requirements and low ash. The main reason for deciding which titanium dioxide to be used by paper mills is the cost of papermaking, that is, the cost-effectiveness of titanium dioxide. As the proportion of titanium dioxide in the cost of paper as high as 30 to 50%, so paper mills in the case of meeting the requirements of users, the choice of titanium dioxide can be said to be catty, can use anatase never use rutile. Paper industry requirements for the quality of titanium dioxide, in order of importance:
          1) Covering power (opacity): paper containing the same titanium dioxide can cover the ability of the base color, this indicator determines the cost-effectiveness of titanium dioxide. Simply put, high hiding power of titanium dioxide, the general price is high, but the amount of use is small, so the cost of titanium dioxide per ton of paper may be lower; low hiding power of titanium dioxide, although the price is low, but the amount of use is large, resulting in a higher cost of titanium dioxide per ton of paper;
          2) Whiteness: the whiteness of titanium dioxide determines the appearance of the paper after molding.
The difference between rutile titanium dioxide and anatase titanium dioxide
          I. Physical properties
          1)Relative density
Among the commonly used white pigments, titanium dioxide has the smallest relative density, and among the white pigments of the same quality, titanium dioxide has the largest surface area and the highest pigment volume.
          2)Melting point and boiling point
Since anatase type will be transformed into rutile type at high temperature, the melting point and boiling point of anatase titanium dioxide are practically nonexistent. Only rutile titanium dioxide has a melting point and boiling point, the melting point of rutile titanium dioxide is 1850 ℃, the melting point in the air is (1830 ± 15) ℃, the melting point in the oxygen-rich 1879 ℃, the melting point and the purity of titanium dioxide. The boiling point of rutile titanium dioxide is (3200±300)℃, at this high temperature titanium dioxide is slightly volatile.
          3) Dielectric constant
Because of the high dielectric constant of titanium dioxide, it has excellent electrical properties. In the determination of certain physical properties of titanium dioxide, to consider the crystallization direction of titanium dioxide crystals. The dielectric constant of anatase titanium dioxide is relatively low, only 48.
          4)Electrical conductivity
Titanium dioxide has the properties of a semiconductor, its conductivity increases rapidly with the rise in temperature, and it is also very sensitive to oxygen deficiency. The dielectric constant and semiconductor properties of rutile titanium dioxide are very important to the electronics industry, and can be utilized to produce electronic components such as ceramic capacitors.
          5) Hardness
According to the Mohs hardness ten system scale, rutile titanium dioxide for 6 ~ 6.5, anatase titanium dioxide for 5.5 ~ 6.0, so in the chemical fiber matting to avoid wear and tear of the spinneret hole and the use of anatase titanium dioxide.
          6) Hygroscopicity
Titanium dioxide is hydrophilic, but its hygroscopicity is not too strong, rutile type is smaller than anatase. The hygroscopicity of titanium dioxide has a certain relationship with the size of its surface area, large surface area, high hygroscopicity, but also with the surface treatment and nature.
          7) Thermal stability
Titanium dioxide is a thermally stable material.
          Second, chemical properties
Titanium dioxide's chemical properties are extremely stable, is a kind of acidic amphoteric oxide. Almost no reaction with other elements and compounds at room temperature, oxygen, ammonia, nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide are not effective, insoluble in water, fat, and insoluble in dilute acids and inorganic acids, alkalis, soluble only in hydrofluoric acid. However, under the action of light, titanium dioxide can have a continuous redox reaction, with photochemical activity. This kind of photochemical activity, in the ultraviolet irradiation of titanium dioxide is especially obvious, this property makes titanium dioxide even if some inorganic compounds photosensitive oxidation catalyst, but also some organic compounds photosensitive reduction catalyst.
    3) dispersibility: now the paper process generally use dispersants, therefore, titanium dioxide water dispersion is not much difference.
4)Weathering resistance: domestic rutile can meet the weathering performance requirements of most papers, only very few papers need rutile to provide very high weathering performance.
    5) retention rate: the paper industry are filtered water reuse, or the use of retention aid, general recovery rate of titanium dioxide are above 99%, the reason for retaining this indicator, because the international titanium dioxide companies in the marketing of titanium dioxide specializing in papermaking are at the same time to provide retention agent formulations and methods of use, in order to improve the quality of service and increase the competitiveness of the product.
